The Experience of Parenthood as a Mother the First Year after Giving Birth

Becoming a mother changes many things and perspectives of a mother’s life. The mother’s body, time, and even identity transform in ways no one can fully prepare any mom for. While this journey brings incredible joy, it also comes with challenges that deserve an honest discussion.

The Mother’s Body After Birth The physical changes go far beyond just losing baby weight:

  • The mother’s hormones fluctuate wildly, affecting everything from emotions to hair growth
  • Common issues like perineal tears or C-section recovery require a good amount of time for complete healing
  • Simple acts like sitting or walking may hurt at first, which is normal but rarely discussed

The Emotional Rollercoaster

After giving birth, mothers’ encounter a mixture of complicated feelings that may affect the negatively. Approximately 1 in 7 women experience postpartum depression, also known as perinatal depression. This condition involves feelings of sadness, indifference, and anxiety, and can impact a woman’s energy, sleep, and appetite. For instance, most moms during the first few months will encounter a mixture of intense love mixed with moments of doubt, that is, asking questions like “Am I doing this right?” Other times, frustration occurs when the baby cries continuously and the mother has a problem to soothe or calm the baby immediately. Lastly, anxiety and mood changes are common because the mom’s body changes postpartum. If a mother lacks the ability to control or manage these emotions can to depressive symptoms.

Practical Survival Tips for Moms

To reduce some of these stresses, moms can learn how babies communicate and know how to respond to them. For instance:

  1. Comforting your baby isn’t spoiling them but rather helping them meet their needs.
  2. When overwhelmed, it’s okay to put the baby in a safe space and take 5 minute-rest to recover some energy. Their needs are urgent, but your stability matters just as much.
  3. Keeping track of the small victories can lead to big progress.
  4. Accept help when offered can be handy because you weren’t meant to do this alone.

Our program helps moms understand that, if you’re struggling through this journey—whether from physical pain, depression, or the overwhelming weight of new motherhood—you are not alone! Your experiences are valid, and help is available.

  • Speak for yourself— For example, if a doctor dismisses your pain, find a second opinion.
  • Associate with other moms—Online and physical communities can provide more or first-hand experience and understanding when those around you don’t “get it.” Your healing is the Baby’s healing—Whether through therapy, medication, or physical rehabilitation, recovery is essential and possible.

Remember: Motherhood is transformative, but it’s not always beautiful. By sharing our stories, we can reshape the narrative—making space for both the joy and the struggle.
